Microchipping Your Pet
Why is microchipping your pet important?
Firstly having your pet microchipped provides an identification link to you.
If your pet is injured or lost, microchipping would provide a fast option of medical treatment and/or getting the animal safely back to its owner.
Even if your pet is an indoor pet, you can never be 100% certain that they won’t slip out the door when you have visitors or workmen at your home; or if you accidentally leave the window/door open.
Collars are a good form of identification when combined with tags, however if the collar was to get caught on or in something, it may
1. injure your pet as it struggles to release itself
2. break or slip off
3. cause the tags to fall off or be damaged
4. if a person takes your pet they would just have to remove the collar and the identification that links you and your pet is gone.
Pets like to wander. There have been many instances reported of a pet and their family moving house or State where the pet escapes from the new home, travels hundreds of kilometres to arrive back at their old home.
SO lets take a look at the benefits of microchipping
To be microchipped the pet has a tiny chip injected under the skin at the back of the neck.
It is quick and secure for the life of the pet.
IT is about the size of a grain of rice and has a unique number imprinted on it.
It can be painlessly scanned by vets, animal shelters or council ensuring a quick return of wayward pets
On implantation your pet is registered on a National database
Some councils give rate payer microchip vouchers to subsidize the cost of implantation In 2010 it is much cheaper than original cost when first brought to the public.
However do your research if cost is a concern.
(I microchipped my cat in 2009, used a council voucher and paid $15)
Some pet owners love the idea that it is permanent
It cannot be removed of destroyed like collars and tags making it perfect for animals.
Contact details can be easily updated through the National database.
